Company Timeline


1994 - Tom Scott opens his own CPA firm, Trinity Accounting Group.

1998 - Dave Mulkey founds Mulkey Construction.

2001 - Dave Mulkey and Tom Scott partner to start The Dovetail Companies. Dovetail builds its first student housing development called "The Woodlands of Statesboro". Tommy Mulkey joins the company as Director of Construction.

2003 - A for sale student community called Brookwood Mill is developed that becomes the prototype for upcoming "Woodlands" communities.

2003 - Woodlands of Athens is built as a for sale student community in 3 phases. Sale of every home is completed in less than one year from its final construction.

2004 - Dovetail sets outs for development in Clemson, SC, building on the success they’ve had in Athens, GA. Ben Griffith joins the company as Chief Operating Officer.

2005 - A new headquarters is built in Athens, designed by Dovetail as a Class-A mixed-use facility called The Terraces.

2006 - Knoxville, TN is the next site of a new Woodlands community. Dovetail brings all Marketing, Advertising and Property Management In-House. Scott Hollingsworth joins the company to head this new division as Director of Market Operations and Mike Swope joins his team as Director of Campus Marketing.

2007 - Dovetail sets out to develop a new 542 unit Condo/Apartment hybrid community in College Station, TX. All creative and design work is brought In-House. Rob Orihuela joins the company as Creative Director and Rachel Patterson becomes Regional Manager of Property Operations.

2008 - Dovetail puts its flagship development brand “The Woodlands” under a massive redesign from community design to branding and advertising. The Woodlands of Columbia, a 1209 bed community, is built and 100% leased in 10 months.
